D3X shot and a forest inside my studio (critiques are appreciated)

Hi,

This was shot with my D3x, which I still use a lot. And yup, this is NOT a location shoot. This forest was literally built inside my studio [img]data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

If you wanna know how that happened, the full story is told on this YT video below:

Forest shoot:

Critiques are highly appreciated.

We can only improve if we realize what went not so well, so please, critique all you want.

Best regards,
Marcio Napoli

I got my D3X the year it came on the market. It's been my dearest
tool in my publishing work since. Sure, I have other bodies but they
have other niches.

The ONLY camera that does not shoot videos!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

The D3X is awesome, isn't it?

Deep, rich colors, super clean shadows at base ISO, and I'm sure you're with me on that one: it has one of the best highlight headroom ever in any cameras.

Seriously, the only other camera I've ever seen with more highlight headroom was a P40+ I had the pleasure of borrowing back in 2012.

Other than the P40+, the D3X remains unmatched in highlight recovery IMO.

Amazing body and amazing sensor.

Be warned, Kira… it is highly addictive, like most single digit bodies! :P

Search one on ebay, you'll love it.

It's a single digit body, needless to say amazing built quality, and the sensor itself is very special.

Colors are super rich, just like many cameras were before the (super high) megapixel race (pre 2010), highlight headroom on this camera is second to none.

As posted earlier, I've only ever knew one sensor with better hightlight headroom (Phase One P40+).

24 mp is plenty, it's awesome resolution and flexibility at the same time.

In short, D3x is among the best cameras Nikon has ever made, even in 2021.

For D3x fans, a few D3x shots from past shoots, those will have dedicated You Tube episodes on my channel later on :)

Those episodes will cover in details how these shots were done (the antenna shoot is specially interesting) :D

I can't still believe that how you have created the forest atmosphere in your studio. Brilliant work indeed. Proper set-up and lighting within the studio is really amazing. I love all the efforts you put here, marcio_napoli.

Hi saponcpa,

Thank you so much for the comments! :D  Really, really appreciate it :)

Well, a few more comments haha :D  as presented in the video, the original idea was not mine, it was from a large, national level campaign for a brand called Dummond here in Brazil.

Ever since I've seen that campaign (link is in the description in my video) I was so mesmerized, that I wanted (needed) to try that for myself.

It took me 7 years to finally have a proper space and conditions to do it.

I'll tell you something... after that shoot, we felt really amazing for months and months down the road.

So if you can have access of a space (a backyard or shed) and lots of free (or cheap) plants, do it, you'll have a massive, gigantic feeling of accomplishment.

For us here, that feeling lasted at least 4 or 5 consecutive months. :D :D

It's really not that hard to do. All it takes is a backyard and a ton of free plants, and about 4 or 5 days setting the stage. Plants were placed under art direction rules, so it's not just throwing them there randomly.

If you can set this up, do it, you'll love it to bits!

We even did a second version, featuring a "nightime" lighting, while plants were still holding on. Sadly, many plants died even if we gave them water daily.

After both shoots were done, plants that remained alive were planted in the yard :)

That nightime version will be featured in a future video on my channel :D  it will take a while before that one is edited haha

There're many other videos waiting in the pipeline before that one.

Thank you for commenting once again!

If you wanna try something similar and want tips, please feel free to ask me anything you want!
