My Niece

12 years 10 months ago #74837 by mj~shutterbugg
I took my niece's senior portraits as a favor but started thinking I would like to do that more. Here is my fave from the day. I know you can't see her face but it feels like a true portrait as that darn phone seems transplanted on her hand

Any crit on how to improve it?

I'm a fan of red heads. Nice hairlight. Could use a touch more fill. Do you have a reflector?

Your local hobby shop will carry foam core. Works fine for less $$$.

Even a white sheet on the ground in front of her will help.

One more thing is the eyes need to be seen. Make a funny noise to get her to look up from the phone (for a sec). I don't think you'd lose the natural feeling it has. And I like the inclusion of the phone. As you said, it's a part of her.

Mathew mentioned it - fill flash or reflector. I would like a little less crop to show her left arm. Fantastic photo. I can see why you picked it.

I teach getting it right in camera, but there is a Ps "trick" for faux fill that works very well. I don't take credit for it, as I learned it at another forum.

Quick and easy fill light in Ps:

1. Open photo
2. Display Channels
3. Click on the dotted circle at the bottom (selects highlights)
4. Select > Inverse (selects shadows)
5. Open Curves (Image > Adjustments > Curves)
6. Raise the Curve till it looks good
7. Save.

HTH

Please, post the result. :)

another technique but must be used gently, is to take photo into photoshop and dodge around the face, use a soft brush, dial in around 30% exposure and make sure "protect tones" is ticked this helps to avoid clipping.

I am going to try Matthews idea also as it sounds good.

I dont mind not seeing her face fully as you say this about her personality.

I like those fold-up windshield screens sold at Wally-World or auto stores.. I have a white, a gold, and a silver.. they expand to about a 24-inch circle or fold up to a flat 12-in circle and fit in my backpack..
