Natural light portrait

I took individual portraits of the family at our last get together but my sister was always busy with other things and was missed.

On her recent visit to my city we decided to take some time to get some portraits for her. We were looking to do something a little different.

We both prefer this one

C & C welcome

Such a natural look. I like these better than most portraits.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

:judge: :judge: I love the lighting soft but still enough drama.

What is important is that you know her. Ask yourself, do YOU feel it portrays her well?

Matthew :)

PS the lighting and technical stuff are all fine. It's the emotional (i.e. the psychological) that matters most in a portrait.

I like the lighting and the overall look. However you've made a classic portrait mistake.

You shot too wide.

Her feet/legs look pretty darn huge.

@ Mathew
thanks for your comment and insights. Of course you are correct. I guess that is a big reason both she and I prefer this portrait. It portrays her well.

@S. Ninja
Ssssh, don't tell her. People have been bugging her all her life about that. ;)
Seriously, that is my one misgiving about this portrait and I wondered if it was just me or if anyone else would notice. Obviously, then, the perspective is a problem.
We were in a narrow alleyway so I was limited to a normal lens to capture all I wanted in the frame.
Next time I will have to ensure to shoot along the alley so I can get further from the subject and compress the image more or use a different pose. In this particular photo I felt the pose was integral to the feeling I wanted to convey.
Thanks for the insightful comment.

Have you thought of cropping at the hem of the skirt? I'm not convinced that the compositional device of the parted shins and joyned knees is not untimately distracting.Nice light on te head.
