Tough question... What are your rates?

We have discussions from time to time about just what a professional is and what it takes to make a professional. I think if you have the drive, a camera and someone to mentor with you can indeed become a better photographer and that can lead to becoming a professional. There are a lot of ingredients to mix and bake before that cake rises though.

I am with Charles. I see potential. I think mentoring would be an excellent idea, I am currently trying to find a mentor of my own to break into the portrait market.

do you have what it takes to be a professional ? Do you have a degree in photography or are you a student in school ?Are you willing to work as an assistant and work your way up ? Lots of questions are needed to answer the one you posed. two samples of your work that are good isn't enough to evaluate but the two you posted are cute shots and show talent and good composition but the best child pix are shot on their level. Do you have the persistence and drive to be a professional in all senses of the word-it takes more than good composition. It takes more than talent alone and sometimes it takes quite a while to establish yourself. Are you good at marketing and have good business sense ? It takes a lot to become successful in this business. I would say YES you have what it takes if you can follow your dreams up with a solid knowledge base, a can do attitude, a willingness to learn on a continuous basis andthe people skills needed to perform the job. Now let's talk equipment...

Anybody that works hard enough has the potential. How badly do you want it? One critique of the posted images. Don't shoot down on kids. Get down on their level and you will get much better images.

One question everyone seems to skate around .... are you willing to cut throats to get ahead?

One main reaon I stopped doing weddings is because everyone with a 35mm and flash was a 'photographer' and would undercut me. My markup was modest at best for the quality of materials I used.

There's a dark side to turning pro .... are you willing to explore that to get ahead?

No matter how fast I go, there's always someone slower in front of me.

Surprising question for someone who has called herself snapshots, I know its only a fun name for the forum, but the main thing is you have to believe in yourself, regarding the photographs you have presented here, based on those alone I would have to say no, but that doesnt mean you cant, listen very careful to what Rob has said, he is right on the mark.
On the cutting throats and small mark ups dont worry, I am a pro and I dont cut throats or make a small mark up, the people who do are fools, I make a good living bar this break for my back to be sorted, you make your mark and you set your prices and stick to them.
Charles's analogy with the cake is a good one, make sure you get the right mix and hey presto with cream on top.

There is a lot of good advice here for you. I would only add that along with getting on a child's level is not to be afraid to get close up also. Most home pics of the child shows the entire body, if you get close up & can capture an image that shows the beauty in the eyes or a cute expression that mom & dad don't think to get, you've got a sale there. Also not every photo has to have the child smiling to have an impact. Get lots of posing books & use them. Above all, don't take a critique personally..I know it's hard not to... but instead look at what it is telling you not to do or what to do to get better in your work.

There is such a fine line between honest critiquing and painful feelings. No one is trying to hurt your feelings but the question was a loaded one. I am not a pro people photographer, I am currently learning that speciality. It is a honed skill. There was another thread about critiquing and I said how painful a good one is as it forces growth which is a painful process. Going pro as a photographer is a painful process, at least on my end, because as easy as it is to give for me it is hard to say no I can't give that to you, you need to pay me. Some friends are confused why I do just hand over prints.

What I am doing to branch out into the portrait market, I am taking on clients for free to grow and learn on. They get a free print per person as a modeling fee, I get a signed contract to use their images for advertising. Will it make me money now- no. Will I grow and build a solid foundation yes according to my resources. People can see when you have the same models over and pver and they wonder hoiw experienced you truly are.

I was gonna ask you MJ - if you could loan out your big girl panties.

I reviewed some of Tracy's albums. She has some good shots in there as well as some I might have left off. But for the size of her uploads the drive is there. I just hope she wasn't driven off by some of our replies. If she was I guess that answers the original question.

Tracy come back if you read this... We can play nice. :nunu:

Sorry Charles, my big girl panties are all mine. Took many years to acquire them. I am sure that if Tracy wants to do this she can find her own set
