Has a UV filter ever saved your rear end?

I've always had a UV filter on my lenses and never really had a need for them. I'm very careful with my gear. I'm wondering if having the UV on some of my lenses causes vignetting.

So just a curious question, has having one of these actually saved your butt (your len's butt!).

Nope. I haven't had an accident where a UV filter would have protected the camera in 20 years of almost daily shooting. I stopped using them.

I have had lens hoods save a lens from a fall or hard bash dozens of times. I use them every time i take my camera out of the bag.

I don't use one, always a pain when I want to screw on another filter.

We've had countless UV filters shatter/break over the years. Whether or not they saved the front element is debatable but they certainly do help in the case of scratches and whatnot. They can cause problems in terms of flare and things of that nature but I personally just use them as a lens cap :)

Will you guys send your lenses off with a UV filter on them already?

Doing paintball photography I won't go anywhere without my UV filter on. Last year's game I was walking away and they were throwing pods off the roof. One came down, smashed my fingers and hit the UV filter right on the rim. It's shaky now and rattles when I take it off to clean the camera, so I can say it saved my butt. I wouldn't have wanted to know what it would have done to my lense. For the most part, I forget it's there :P

The front element of your lens is thick, and much stronger than any filter. It may have gotten splattered, but could be cleaned.

Having said that, I'd probably use a filter at a paintball game too!

:agree:

If I thought my lens was in danger I'd definitely use one. It's just not an issue with the photography I normally do.
