Do you believe this statement?

I just got told this when I made a statement about wanting to someday make some money with my camera. "Best way to ruin a hobby is to turn it into work".

Have any of you started your photography interest as a hobby, then work and regretted it after?

Very nice to meet you!

Best way to ruin your work is to work at something you do not enjoy doing. That's what I believe.

Now the best way to ruin a hobby is to have something you enjoy but are no good at then going professional and failing at it.

Show us some images from your portfolio... :woohoo:

I might agree. I'm happy that I'm able to earn a living with my camera, but it does change things. Now I spend more time and energy working on other people's projects than my own. I associate things like insurance and taxes with photography. Attaching a paycheck to any activity can turn it from fun to work. I still like photography as work better than anything I tried before. :) It is my goal to be an amateur photographer again someday.

amateur: a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit.

I agree with the above answers and enjoy work with my camera, yeah some days are better than others, overall it's more of a joy than a job-especially compared to my former career as a nurse. go for your passion and don't let anyone dissuade you with their pessimism

I don't know. I know my other passion is/was CNC Programming, I loved it but there was tedium to go along with it. So, yes and no?

Don't pi$$ me off, I am running out of room to store the bodies...

I'd just counter with "Find something you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life."

I agree. And I also agree with Borrowlenses.

It depends on the situation. There's times I think to myself "Man I never want to see another video/photo again" then I remind myself I could be sitting at a desk, clocking in and out at designated times. Eating lunch to a schedule... yeh man, I'm blessed to be able to do a job I love. :)

Yes and No. It depends on how much you really enjoy that hobby. If you really enjoy then doing it as work won't make any difference.

:agree:
Several years ago my husband and I had our own servers, they were his babies. We had 19 servers in our home. He loves working on servers. Then he finally got an IT job for a company (which is the job he wanted). We haven't had our own servers in 7yrs, because he works on computers/servers all day, he doesn't want to come home and work on our servers. He loves his job and glad he was able to find a job he loves (instead of being like most people in the world working a job they hate). He has told me that he rather see me taking pictures for fun, instead of making it a job, because I may come to hate it. And I have to admit it, it's true. I'm not really into shooting portraits, but there was a time I was marketing myself for portraits/events. The several I did, I did not have any fun at all. I love photography, but I mostly love shooting for myself, for the fun of it ...I don't have fun shooting portraits/events. It's stressful. My love, my fun is nature and wildlife photography. And although I am trying to sell a couple prints here and there, I will never push myself to be an all time pro, (photo quality yes, but income wise no)

For the last 5 yrs I have wondered this question for myself and that is one of the things that keep me from going "PRO" or even "semi-pro" is the fun factor I would love to do this all day everyday but I really don't want it to feel like just another crappy job..... so I went back to school for graphic design

:agree: When I'm feeling down about my job I go downtown on a Monday morning, get a cup of coffee, and watch people rush off to work. :) That always makes me feel lucky!

If I won the lottery tomorrow I would still shoot weddings because I enjoy it. I wouldn't shoot near as many as I do these days, but I would still take a few every year.
