Getting a newborn to smile in photos

I'm just curious what others are doing to get newborns to smile in photos? Squeaky toys, backing silly faces? What works best for you?

Newborns don't tend to smile unless they have gas. They are not developed enough to be able to do two things at once so it is very hard for them to smile while moving their arms & legs. In most cases it's just a matter of timing & being patient enough to wait for it & click the shutter release at just the right time. Once they get a couple of months you can make funny noises at the & they will respond.

There was some discussion before so if you search the forum you might find that. A really young baby has of course his/her primary connection w/mom and hasn't developed secondary relationships to others yet. As Maria said it's going to be a matter of waiting and watching and catching the baby making a face that you like for a photo. Or a sweet sleeping expression could work.

There was some discussion too about whether or not to use a flash w/a newborn; it may be best to check w/the parents before you assume it's OK (and they may need to check w/their child's pediatrician ahead of time). I worked as a development specialist w/babies and toddlers and it didn't come up that I remember but I think it may not be the best thing to do at that age. I'd go w/the parents comfort level about using a flash, poses, lighting etc.

Don't worry about getting a newborn to smile. Just buy cute little props, like hats, baskets, blankets etc.. to use in the photographs. The baby with those props will make the parents smile and that's very important when it comes to their newborn baby portraits.

With newborns it's all about luck, luck and oh luck. Focus on getting them looking cute. Even a cute crying baby can look adorable if you have the attire and prop's in place.

I think that the wide eyes of a baby and/or child are much more adorable than a smile.

As for newborns, sleeping is always adorable and a lot easier than waiting for a smile! Ha Ha!
