Question about pricing?

I have had a few different people want to hire me to take their photos. I know there are so many variables with this, but I wanted to get a general idea about how much to charge people. I do a lot of pp with photoshop in my images. I would say about 2 hours per photo goes into my images. These people like my work so I need to know how to charge them. I normally spend about one hour on location taking the photos and then go home and work on them. I dont want to give the customer the hi-rez images so I will also need to know how to charge them for prints if I get them done at a local lab. Thanks for all of the help. I am thinking abotu $100-$150 for doing the shoot and then whatever for the prints.

I would guess that's a reasonably decent charge. Really I would just say let the market somewhat decide your prices. If you aren't getting anyone maybe you're charging too much, if you're getting absolutely everyone maybe you aren't charging enough.

Thanks, that is what I thought. Any thoughts on charging for prints. Should I just charge what they charge me at the lab? or should I charge extra and if so how much?

Yes you should charge extra for prints. If you don't plan on charging extra, then you might as well just give the client full res photos on CD and let them print their own. Prints is where the photographer makes their money.

Thanks, now I just need to figure out how much more to charge. I've seen photographers charge $75 for an 8x10. There's no way I can charge that much.

For your print pricing, you may want to check out pricing of other photographers in your area. These things do actually vary a little in some areas. Base your pricing on the going rate and the quality of the finished product. I.E., if the going rate was $100 for a particular print size, but the quality of your work is only 75% as good, charge $75. If it's at least as good, charge the same price others would.

Good point about looking at the going rate of photographers in your area. Starting outm people usually seem to price their work at the lower end of the going rate, more established photographers charge at the higher end. Since people are asking for your photos then they're probably good enough to get the going rate at least.

You could get info. from professional photographers organizations like ASMP on determining pricing etc.
