Portaiture in the woods?

12 years 3 months ago #188837 by Ash4321
so I've got a model, not professional, that I'm photographing. She wants a portrait shot in the woods. I have the spot, but I've never done a portrait with such tree cover. Should I use a flash? What's the best time of day... morning or night? Any insight would be great.

I would say early morning when light is still soft but you have to evaluate the light at that time and decide from there. Direct flash from on camera in general makes a snapshot not portraiture.

When I shot a few of my son under tree cover, I used my speedlight and shot about 30 minutes before sunset (this way I could get the sun coming through the trees as well). I wish I had my radio triggers, so that I could have ran my SB25 and SB600 off camera. This is most likely what youll need to do as well depending on how much shade there is and what time your trying to shoot.

Nikon D200
Nikon 50mm f1.8D, Tokina 28-80 f2.8, Nikon 75-300, Sigma 18-200, Nikon SB-600, Nikon SB-25, Promaster triggers

Thanks, not sure if early morning would be good for the model and I. I'll have to check on that one.

Thank you. I hate to sound stupid, but could you explain to me what radio triggers are? If I may need them, I would like to know what I am buying. lol

When shooting outdoors, pay special attention to whats behind your subjects head. There's nothing like looking at your pictures and it looks like a tree limb growing out of your subjects head. Also, foilage will cause color cast if your not careful.

Seriously that can happen? a color cast from the leaves.

Its just a way to "trigger" or activate a single or multiple off camera flash/flashes

Oh yes, it has happen to me before. Hasn't happen often, but when it does it's annoying. It also wouldn't hurt to use a polarizer.
