Bride & Groom portraits - when?

With the weddings I've been a second shooter at, it seems like the B&G never make enough time in their schedule for portraits of the two of them. Usually they try to cram it in about the hour before the wedding starts, or just after the wedding, on their way to the reception.

Is this normal?

I always do them the day of. I tell the B&G that if they want good photos, they should schedule AT LEAST 1.5 hours after the ceremony, and before the reception, so we can do some great shots.

Sounds normal to me, an hr before the reception. I think bride and groom are too excited to worry about those photos. They just want to party with the family/friends are the reception.

It is normal for most folks to not understand how long portraits are going to take, and underestimate how easy it is to get behind on their wedding day. I sit down with the couple a month or so ahead of the wedding, and we work out a schedule.

I always advise getting as much done early as possible, but some couple don't want to see each other before the ceremony. If it has to be done between the ceremony and the reception then we need to schedule the time. I also try to take the couple aside for a few short portrait sessions a couple of times during the reception. Maybe at sunset and right before I leave.

Thanks everyone. I guess it's just something I have to get used too, especially if someday I want to get into the wedding business myself.

If I've only got 10 min I can work with that if I've planned for it. I'm going to approach an hour plus long session a lot differently than a < 15 min session.

I always schedule an hour into the day, I always check with bride and groom as to the when but it is mostly between wedding and reception, just make sure it is clearly written in the itinerary.

Has anyone taken these B&G portraits after the reception?

I have and I don't recommend it. The main reason is obvious. After the reception, even an afternoon cake and punch type reception, everyone and everything is "worn". The bride's hair and make-up will most likely not look as "fresh" as earlier, as well, the flowers have usually been beaten up a bit.

Often, the couple is simply tired. All of the hype and adrenaline of the day has now worn off and they might not be as excited about taking images. If it is the only time available, then it is certainly better than nothing at all. If you mention the above things to the couple in your consultation prior to the wedding, they will agree and find time within the day for photos.

I've done some before the ceremony and most between the ceremony and the reception depending on the B & G preference. It's not unusual for the formal portraits to take an hour or more depending on the size of the wedding party and family.

:agree: Never after the reception, that would not be pretty..

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.
