Getting the "magazine look"?

How do I get the magazine look when shooting portraits? You know how people in the magazine always looks so perfect in everything. I want to shoot like that. Or is it really all photoshop? and if so, how do I photoshop to get the magazine look?

Isn't the magazine look, like everything else in photography....it's all about the lighting. Of course photoshop helps a lot too.

The lighting on the subject, a good background...well lite or darken, perfect skin on the model either natural or photoshop. Clothing that fits well to the model. Props etc.. It all comes together to get that magazine look. Tons and tons of practice.

Thanks, I guess my first step would be is to get some models.

First you need to get the understanding of your camera (if you don't already), understand how to get the correct exposure, how to under/over expose properly and when needed. Get yourself studio lights, the whole lighting system. A white backdrop would be nice. Practice on a friend or family who is willing to pose until you get it correct. Then get yourself a model.

I do have the understanding of my camera, and how to get the correct exposure. However I never worked with strobes, umbrellas etc..

There were fashion photographers long before photoshopping existed, they were successful because of their expertise, skill etc. You could start looking up fashion greats in the field (like Irving Penn, Helmut Newton). You could look at resources like PDN (Photo District News) which covers current product and fashion photography etc. (under Photoserve you can search fashion). As mentioned you'd need to learn about studio lighting etc. Like many things there's probably no quick answer.

I would agree, most of the "magazine" look is accomplished with the lighting.
