Should I get a D800?

Totally agree. In fact, to me (so far) the D800E difference seems like what you'd get doing strong sharpening on a normal RAW file. Of course technically it's not, but that's what it looks like.

As our prior conversation on iChat, the E is more of medium format type camera. The samples I saw from the d800 normal blew me away. What intrigued me was the lack of losing quality when cropping in. Gives you an artificial reach natively.

I joined the waiting list myself last night. After reading all the reviews, photos and press it was to tempting to pass up.

Did you get the regular or E?

I would love to get the D800, I still like my D300 but it's a few years old and would love to have the 36 megapixels. The cost seems fairly cheap. Maybe I will wait a bit to see what others say when they get it. I would have to buy fx lens which would be an added expense.

Yeh even using DX mode gives you about 16MP and from what I've seen the quality of the grain on the pixels is a lot better than the D7000 (more smooth).

Just a note about the 36MP. I don't think a lot of people need 36MP. If you're not sure why you'd want/need them then I'd recommend something different. :)

You could always change settings in the camera when 36 MP isn't needed

Only if you shoot jpeg. If someone is a jpeg shooter, they probably don't know how to get the most out of those 36MP anyway.

There is no Canon-style sRAW mode on the D800 (I checked). If you need to save space then you can shoot jpeg (not recommended unless you're doing sports and need to get it out really fast... then you'd not buy a D800 for this anyway) or 12bit (as opposed to 14bit) compressed or lossless (as opposed to uncompressed) RAW.

The D700 on my list is now replaced by the D800, only problem is I have to wait until the end of the year.

Well I will be saving for one myself. I like the ISO range without the push on either end. Though I would like to see some examples of the pushes on both ends as well. Going down to ISO 50 would be nice if the IQ stood up.
