Shooting a bride with a wide angle?

12 years 1 month ago #202459 by Cruso
I have an 18-55 and a wedding coming up. The problem is, I'm wondering if I should be using a wide angle (18mm) with a heavy-set bride. Will it make her seem more heavy set? Is there a better lens to use or will this one be OK to use?

Heavy people are heavy that lens would be fine for the wide angle part, but it's not really a fast lens. That is more my concern. If you want to shoot with a zoom lens get yourself a 70-200 f2.8

Angle and pose would have a lot to do with it. I would not shoot a close up that would not be flattering.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Yea I know heavy people are heavy, I just don't want to make her seem heavier.

The wide angle will only distort things if its used close to the subject. (kind of like shooting a head shot close up with a wide angle - the nose looks huge!)

Thanks so no close up shots, got it. I'll try to get a little higher then her, I heard shooting above the subject tends to make people appear thinner.

Close ups that are not "full body" are OK, like a hand (ring) or face, just don't shoot too close on full shots. The articles section has info on wedding shoots. Use the advanced search feature to locate "wedding".

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

:agree:

Perspective is controlled by camera location relative to the subject. The closer the camera gets to the subject the larger close objects will seem in comparison to far objects. If you stand 15' from your subject and take a photo with a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens you could crop the wide angle shot to the same composition as the tele shot, and the perspective will be the same (this doesn't take account of any resolution issues caused by extreme cropping though).

Shooting from above does help. It makes the body smaller relative to the face. It also encourages the subject to look up a bit, and that can help with chin(s) and neck.
