What things do you wish you knew before starting your photography business?

12 years 3 weeks ago #215090 by MYoung
I'm getting close to getting my soon to be wedding and portrait business off the ground and just taking the time to set things up carefully. For those of you who can answer my head line question I would like to know what things you would have liked to have known prior to setting up your photography business?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The company to have a web site with, make sure it can be set up to meet a photographers requirements. Ie: password protect albums, copy protection, etce

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

How to use a camera.

Maureen, like Darrell alluded to. Do you have a website?

Adrian is correct, maybe in his case. However most photography businesses fail not because they don't know how to take and process a photo, but because they don't know how to manage a business. It should NOT be that tough, but it is. Expenses and taxes are a killer and not restricted only to the photo trade...:(

Why so serious?

Know what makes an image worth paying for. Not in my eyes, but in the eyes of the one holding the checkbook. I can finally say, "most people spend more with me than they originally intended to, and they leave happy." It didn't take me long to learn that the best compliments are paid with checkbooks and credit cards.

In life there have always been those who make fire; but most just sit around the fire and enjoy the warmth. A great mind absent of action is waste.

That a good business person will make more money from a photography business than a good photographer.

I wish I spent more time on learning Photoshop and took a workshop on how to design photo albums!

I wish I had taken a getting started course or paid more attention to photography forums to get advice from other photographers.
