When to ask for referrals?

I'm sure everyone is different with this question. Personally when I deliver the last of the clients images, I'll ask for referrals. Actually I have a survey like sheet that I give them and on the bottom it asks and has space for them to include 3 referrals. I'm just curious when and how are you asking for referrals?

I have never asked my clients for referrals, I leave business cards for them to pass to others if they know anyone looking for a photographer. Maybe it is a good idea but to me that is something insurance agents and vacuum cleaner salesmen do.

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

About a weeks after the event, I'll send them a thank you card and I leave a few business cards in there to be passed out.

I think it would be better to ask after the job is completely done and they have paid their bill. Thank you cards is a good idea, but I would send out within a week or two at most after job is finished.
