Photography gear on airplanes

I just got a call from a friend of mine who just landed in Paris, France who took off from New Jersey. He was hired for a destination wedding in Paris and while getting on the airline in New Jersey, apparently there was limited over head space or something that caused them to check his camera bag (which he apparently agreed to) any way when he finally landed in Paris, his bag had been damaged and one of his lenses had fallen out or was missing (details are not clear to me).

That's all I have from him at this time, the call was scattered and not granular details I would like to have known.

Now I've never had this problem before, but for certain valuable bags like this one that is in regulation size requirements for carry on, do they have the right to force you to check in the bag?

Each airline posts there carry-on size limits on their websites. My backpack fits that limit and the only time it has had to ride under the plane was on a small regional carrier where I could watch it being loaded and pick it up on the tarmac.
Check on the checked baggage insurance from the airline. Being for a "professional" shoot, it have cause problems. Professional coverage is different than that for "amateur" shooters. I know a professional wildlife photographer who was assured by his agent he was coverage but the claim was denied when he lost $8K in gear in the Amazon. The claims adjustor said that if he sold even one photo, he was a pro and needed another special coverage.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Oh man, I hope he finds it. Are you able to place a lock on bags holding expensive gear?

In the US, there are TSA approved locks that they can open but not sure how that is handled overseas.

Wasn't a member of the TSA, just arrested somewhere for stealing personal belongings from passengers?

Airline baggage handlers are the biggest thieves on the planet. If I was told I had to check my camera bag, I would step out of line. There would be a discussion, and I guarantee the bag would NOT leave my possession.....

Why so serious?

Yes, but occasionally a police officer will get caught stealing or a fireman setting a fire. Nothing is fool-proof because fools are so ingenious.

That is so hard, sure hope the lens turns up but have my doubts it will ever be seen again. I do lots of long haul flights, and always carry all my gear as cabin luggage, NEVER EVER check photo equipment into the hold, as long as your carry on bag is of legal size, you won`t have a problem.

There is no way I would let them go taking my gear and placing under the plane!

I always make sure my carry on is smaller than airline requirements. I wouldn't want to be put in a position like this.

Good luck with that. I'm guessing that lens is long gone and on the black market.

I hate to say, but I agree. This lens is a lost cause. Good luck with the replacement.
