How long did it take you to figure out your style?

I'm beginning to see what appeals to me, and what I can live with, whithout "mastering". I'm recognizing that I don't have a very good eye for landscapes, but I have a decent one for people. And though I like looking at landscapes shot by others, I don't have a desire to concentrate my efforts on that aspect of photography. So it looks like people photography is going to be my thing!
I'm a year into it and just now scratching the surface of what I really enjoy. How long did it take you to realize what you wanted to shoot?

I'm still exploring all the different genre and trying to improve in all of them.

My style? Shallow DOF, slow ISO. I don't know why. I know when I shot film my favorite film was Kodachrome 64. I know I have missed many shots due to the fact that I choose a shallow DOF.

Very good question

I have the style of no style. I just shoot whatever looks interesting to me, and how I see it. I have shot pretty much everything at one point in my 40+ years of this hobby.

I can appreciate that approach. And for the most part I'm the same way. I'll shoot whatever looks neat at the time, or whatever inspires me at the moment. But what excites me is shooting portraits. I'm making purchases to fit those needs.

I love nature photographs, and abstract stuff as well. I'd like to photograph people, but I don't quite know how you approach this.

The other day when I was at the park, I saw three Chaldean girls in chador sitting with a younger girl in a hot pink sundress...all of them drinking Pepsi. I wanted to photograph them, but wasn't sure how that would be received. Also, asking to photograph them would have taken something from the scene and made it feel contrived.

Let's see. After a half century my style is "anything goes". What appeals to me is architecture, fast boats, festivals, landscapes, vintage aircraft, and lingerie (in my dreams). What I expect to master is nuthin. What excites me is new (to me) situations. So wut was the question?

what I'm really good at is sports- especially hockey. my favorite shots are with the puck in mid-air or stretching the back of the net. It took me a long time to master these shots. I love landscapes but I am not quite as good at them yet.

I just shoot what I enjoy looking at the most and it happened to be landscapes and nature photography and I'm decent at it

I love landscape photography because it captures the beauty of God's creation

I have no idea what my style is, even if I have one.

Does anyone really have a style? To me that is always changing, evolving into better skills. Well that's just my 2 cents.

From reading this thread it appears that people are talking about area's of photography rather than styles ie People, nature, sports with the exception of Dori who mentioned shallow DOF etc...

I would interpret a style as a type of shot within a Genre, for example when shooting drifting I try and get as slow a shutter as possible whereas others will try and freeze the action.

In terms of style I guess it depends on what you are shooting for.

My style, it depends on what I am shooting and what I have learnt so far, I have a hell of a lot to learn so until I comfortable shooting in all the genre's I would like to shoot there is no way I could apply a style to my shooting...

Style? I guess I'd have to say that I don't have one...I just try to capture the appropriate exposure and DOF for any interesting subject I see that prompts me to instantly imagine a composition. Subjects...most any, with the exception of people!

Okay... I'll rephraze the ???

How long did it take for you to realize your preference in subjects? But the style question is still on the table!
