NIKON & LENSES

NIKON PHOTOGRAPHERS: Has anyone used any other lens beside Nikon brand ones? Ex. Tamron, Sigma, Zeiss..etc. What's your view on them? Performance, quality, weight and other specs.

That depends on the specific lens you are talking about. 3rd party vendors also have different quality level lines, so making a blanket statement is kinda self defeating...That said, are you talking new or used?. Used lenses can be subject to abuses that take away from an otherwise good lens...Another thing need to be taken into account is sample variation. Then you have personal opinions, what I may think is good, another person may not...So your question has many different facets & one cannot generalize an answer

I have to agree with Scott. I only have one third party lens, and that is the Tamron 28-300. For its price it is a fair lens, but slow as hell on my D300. I have had a Sigma before, it was their 50 f/1.4, but I had a bad copy of that one, so I sent it back and tried another copy, which was also bad. So then I just sent it back and got the Nikon, which my cousin has on my old D50.

Now I'm a Canon shooter so not talking from direct experience. But will say a good friend of mine shoots nothing but Sigma and Tamron. I've asked him why not just stick with one brand and he replied that certain lenses are much better in one brand than another. But I know he is very happy with his choices. I want to say he just bought a 150-500mm Sigma or maybe it was 50-500mm either way it's a big lens.

Hope that helps.

I had the Sigma macro 105 f/2.8 and also the Sigma 150 f/2.8, used them on my D80, D300 and D700. They were both simply stellar. Also at one time had the Tokina 12-24 DX, which was also a fine lens, but I sold it once I got the Nikon 10-24...... ;)

Why so serious?

Im mostly looking at another fast telephoto lens. Like the Nikon 80-200mm 2.8. Some 3rd parties are offering a lens similar but the ranges may differ. Im looking for a good fast lens. I've never looked at 3rd parties. Also wanted to stay with the Nikon brands. The store that I go to let you try on the with your camera and get a feel for it. I think now I need to give it a shot and try the other brands. They are also much cheaper.

Another fast lens I've looked at is the 24-70mm 2.8

I love my Nikon 80-200 f 2.8 . I had a Tamrom 70-200 fast lens but sold it because it would "hunt" too much for hockey work. I have a Tokina 28-70 f 2.8 that is stellar and a Promaster 100mm Macro that I love as well. otherwise I have stuck with Nikon lenses and have been very happy.
