Why are cameras mainly black?

I've always wanted a red camera. You see those Hasselblad that are red and they look so sexy. Maybe that's the girly side of me talking, but I like.

I think black is a good universal color. Just think if they came out with different colors of all the additional manufacturing they would have to do. Also I bet reselling the cameras would be more difficult too.

In the old days large wooden and metal cameras used in studios could be more likely to cause reflections and flares from the shiny finish, so it became popular to cover professional cameras in textured black leather (very non-reflective). Consumer cameras have always come in a variety of colors, I have a rainbow of old Brownie box cameras in my collection, but black being associated with "pro" makes it cool.

Some people claim black cameras are more inconspicuous, but I think a lot of factors go into that. A big, black DSLR with a typical modern zoom lens seems pretty conspicuous to me.

I have no real understanding of manufacturing color costs, but it doesn't seem outrageous to be that black might be cheap and easy?

Google "special edition Leica" and go to the Images for some pretty garish cameras.

Would you actually buy a camera that was a different color?
