Imagine a lens that covered 15mm to 500mm at f/2.8?

How awesome would that be to have one lens that covered such a wide focal range at f/2.8 while giving the same results as individual primes or smaller focal ranged lenses? Wishful thinking.

Sadly, never going to happen. The physics won't allow it. Besides, who wants a combination wide angle, walk-around, oversized tele lens?

I'd be happy if they could come up with a 50-150 f/1.8. But that's equally unlikely.

Raising my 50-500 is a workout. Can not imagine the size that sucker would have to be. Maybe mounted in the bed of a pickup.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

The FZ200 is a P&S camera, and that's the lens it has. The camera costs around $500, I think.

I would bet that lens would be something like $12,000 if it existed at least.

At that price I would worry about it working at all. The Sigzilla is if I remember correctly in the $24K range. I think this would on the low side be mid $30K and most likely in the upper $40K end.
Then there is the size issue. The Sigzilla is 35lbs, so an optic with those specs could easing come in at double that weight. You would need to have a lot of correcting lens elements in it to keep a consistent quality through out the zoom range.

How so? Have you seen reports on its quality?

I bet it's comparable to the 600 f/4 from nikon or canon, your pick ;P

I checked back, and it's actually a Leica lens. And it is a P&S, after all. Here's the review:

500mm / 2.8 = 178.5mm diameter of max aperture. So the lens diameter is probably more than 20cm. How much would a 50cm x 20cm zoom lens weigh?

Maybe new technology will allow smaller lenses with similar performance? www.wired.com/rawfile/2012/08/new-flat-l...ras-as-we-know-them/
