Wearing jeans to out door photography gig

I've been asked to shoot an outdoor event. Actually it's a company who is having their yearly summer BBQ at an paint ball event. Would you say it would be OK to wear jeans and sneakers to something like this?

Ask someone who'd know, like the person who hired you. Of course it would be best to dress professionally when in doubt.... ;)

Why so serious?

Don't know about the USA, but in HK it would be fine.

Generally my philosophy is to dress like you're a guest. Do you really think the people going there are NOT going to wear jeans and sneakers?!

If I were shooting paintball I wouldn't be wearing anything that couldn't get dirty, put it that way.

Agreed: talk to the person that hired you.

Of course, camo always makes sense. Or something bright that indicates you're not a target. You don't want them shooting at you.

I have been watching this and got to thinking. Up until a year ago, I didn't own anything but jeans. Then over in the valley at my brother's we were going to dinner at a golf club. Dress code so I had to go buy something other than jeans! I think they are called Dockers, look like h*ll! Got home and went to the Big R in Redmond and found a pair of Wrangler Panatellas. Wore them twice since. My brother likes the golf course restaurant! You can't really tell them from a pair of nice slacks but they sure fit better and feel better.

I usually wear what's appropriate for an event but keep it comfortable enough to work in; I tend to wear something more plain or neutral to be able to blend somewhat into the background.

I feel like it's better to keep it reasonably professional and maybe not quite as casual as the event participants so it's somewhat apparent you're the photographer, not somebody's relative at the event with a camera (especially since there seem to be plenty of those at weddings etc. these days.)

Depends I guess on how much of the event will be spent BBQ'ing and how much time will be spent at paintball; and being hot this time of year, I don't know if it would be an option to take along something extra to change as needed. Does the place have a website? you might get some idea from that.

I tend to dress more professionally but appropriate to the weather and agree with Sharon on this one

Well I do not own any jeans at all. I usually wear my 511 tactical pants when I am out shooting the side pockets are large, and they have dividers in them so you can throw in a couple of extra lenses, and even a flash. I use one side for my filters, and the other for glass when I do not want to lug my pack. If I add the tactical shirt, then I can carry almost all of my packs contents.

I always wear jeans to jobs, but then again I don't do many formal events these days.

ya know, there's jeans and then there's jeans. If what you have is full of hole's and/or patch's, don't wear them. If they are badly faded, don't wear them. I wouldn't wear a brand new pair, they just don't feel right until they've been washed a couple time's. And what would you wear for a shirt? The casual approach could be bad. Mussel shirt's and jeans might work in the Wal Mart but! You can get pretty casual and still look nice.
