Things to consider while taking night photographs in New York City?

I have a NYC trip coming up in August for work. I'll be there for 4 days. During the day I'll be stuck in meetings and have the nights to do what ever. What places are open for tourist at night that allow you to get a high vantage point to photograph the city? For example the Empire State Building, how late is that open for people to go up in? Are there other spots that are good?

While asking questions, NYC is a big city and I'm sure has it's share of camera thieves. Is it safe to go walking around late at night in these areas?

Like any city, just be smart on where you are walking around. If it looks questionable, stand clear of it. Here are the hours for the Empire State Building:

Hours

Open every day, 365 days a year rain or shine
Special Holiday Hours
8AM to 2AM
Last elevator up at 1:15AM

I'd bet that's going to be the best point in the city for night shots. At least the highest point.

Don't overlook the Top of the Rock, the roof of Rockefeller Center's main building. Besides a great south view, including the Empire State Building, you also look down on the skating rink and St Patrick's (hoping the scaffolding is down by then). I wouldn't walk around with an obviously expensive camera dangling in front of me. And, they snatch phones...

Don't overlook other, low spots either. There's a nice park and some great vantage points on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn bridge, down to the Manhattan bridge. Great views of lower Manhattan. At night, be sure to take a friend.....(and/or a firearm... :P )

Landolfi is correct....... www.topoftherocknyc.com/
