How Many Photos Have Been Taken Since Beginning of Photography?

10 years 7 months ago #295042 by PhotographyTalk
OK... so I have to say this is a intriguing topic to ponder about. The folks with 'Vsauce' made a video that gives some interesting facts discussing the question "how many photos have been taken". The discussion about total number of photos taken goes till the 1:59 part in this video, then he starts talking about Facebook a bit.

So what do you think of the facts and math provided in this video? Plausible or No?

Enjoy:
Nikon D600 | Nikon D7100 | Nikon D800 | Canon 5D Mark III | Canon EOS - Rebel T4i

I can see those numbers as being entirely plausible, but that has a large +/- to that. Being an astronomer I remember when some group claimed they knew how many stars there were in the universe, it was some odd googolplex, which made me laugh, it always does when someone claims to know something that is unknowable in mans mind. That was pre-Hubble telescope. Then there is a little area near Ursa Major that looks like a dark area with no light coming from it, but in reality has thousands of galaxies in it. Well this threw their little numbers out the window. So it could indeed be the same with this number. I take any form of definitive numbers with a subject such as this with a large grain of salt.

I'm going to play devils advocate here and ask how did they know how many cameras total are out there? Calculating cell phone photos?

I think his math is interesting and has some entertainment value to it, but I don't think there is any way to calculate this sort of figure based on what was given. There is no way to determine number of photos each user has taken, let alone how many total cameras are in circulation. Just my 2 cents.

There are way to many unknown factors to come close to exact number or even a range.

Canon 7D, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 70-200mm L f/2.8, 100mm and 17-55mm f/2.8

Every time I see a study of something, or a result of a study or survey saying for example: "60% of people who are 27 like the color blue" I think: But they didn't ask me!

For example I have many cameras and many unused films, and with digital, can you really tell?

The number is estimate so, could be, or could be not.

Gray area all the way.

Exactly. They do a study of a 1000 people for example and forget about the other 20 billion people on the planet.

LOL what planet is that? Because this plant only has about 7.2 billion people on it.
