DSLR for my wife for Christmas gift. Need some ad

My wife has hinted that she is ready for a camera that has greater functions than her point & shoot and something in the line of a DSLR . I think she would divorce me if I gave her my D300 and bought a new body for myself  . I'm thinking about the D7100 or the D610 for her. Her P&S is a Canon and I know she would like to stick with Canon, but doing so would mean she would not be able to use any of my lenses and would require more money spent on Canon glass. So that for obvious reasons isn't my first choice. But I'm open to suggestions.

What do you all think? Budget would be ideally under $1800 for body.

Graduating from a P&S it hardly seems worthwhile to go to the D7100. If you already have great glass I would encourage you to consider the D3200 or the D5200. Both excellent cameras, more pixels than you can shake a stick at, and room to grow. Most of the additional features on the D7100 (more focus points, BIM, etc) won't matter to a DSLR beginner. The only think that would make a difference here would be if your glass is old and non-AF-S.

Also to consider: what will fit comfortably in her hand? That may be a critical factor: comfort.

:agree:
Also I will add you can use your Nikon glass on a Canon with an adapter, but not the other way around. That is if she wants to stay with a Canon. It really depends on which P&S she has. Is it one of those Dslr like P&S. or is it your standard little pocket camera? If it is a pocket cam then she will not notice any difference,

I think the D5200 would make a very good 'first' DSLR. Plenty of features to welcome her with. Plus well below your budget and you will have left over for some glass.

Canon 5d Mark II • Canon 24-105mm F/4.0 • Canon 135mm F/2.0 • Canon 50mm F/1.8 • Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 • Canon 580ex ii

I need to get you and my husband talking together  LOL I want a new camera for Christmas!

Really though, I would say the D5200 or even the D3200 would be a lovely camera for your wife.

Nikon D700: 50mm, 14-24mm, 85mm, 105mm 70-200mm, 150-500mm (Sigma), SB-900

D5200 is the happy medium here. I would wait till Black Friday or Cyber Monday coming up

If it were my wife, I'd get her a Canon. I wouldn't want her using my Nikon glass......

Why so serious?

 true, but that just means more glass I would have to buy for her.

I'm leaning towards the D5200. I'm going to look at one of these tomorrow.

Thanks everyone

Owning an X-Pro 1 has taught me Fuji is for people with patience. LOL.

Maybe an X-E2 would be great. Consider a Fuji X-E2 OP. Apparently the AF etc. is much improved. Fuji do have some mighty fine IQ for sure.

IN FACT this would be very nice and not too pricy:

Yup, the mirrorless field sure is fun - for the variety of choices available. Very different from the metoo DLSR game!

For those of us who aren't in the know, please tell me why I would want a mirrorless. I am following this thread very closely because I am about to take the plunge on a new camera purchase. Thanks!

$1800 budget just for the camera? Shoot, just get her a gift card for $1800 and let her get what she wants.
