Tired of non-paying family and friends asking for me to take photos

10 years 4 months ago #319391 by Hawkins
This thread I couldn't help getting a laugh from. My family expects me to take photos every year at all family events! I sure would appreciate a little green stuff from my efforts. Don't get me wrong, a few years ago this was great practice for me. Now, everyone wants me to bring backdrops and process images and portraits, family portraits and edit the photos and deliver on CD. :toetap: I most likely will keep writing this off as experience building.

Yeah, you should stop doing that for free. If you're doing paying gigs for others, tell your family that it's now your livelihood.

[edit] stupid syntax.

Joves you're so clever! LOL

I've taken pictures for immediate family by choice and wouldn't expect them to pay me, beyond that I haven't even been asked to do anything for free. It might be harder now to ask friends and relatives to start paying if it's been done for free in the past.

Maybe letting them know your schedule isn't giving you the time to do it anymore, that you can't take off work to do it etc., and if they know you're in business and want to come in as a paying customer during the time that you work as a photographer that's up to them - or suggest where they can find a portrait photographer in their area.

On holday? Just claim "What about my holiday? No more work for me during holiday."

During working time, claim that you will try and find an open slot, but you need two days, because that is how long processing takes, in case they are not aware.
