Magnets and cameras

Will a magnet harm a DSLR camera or is that just the film cameras.  I remember reading an article and I can't recall if they were talking about film or digital.  But it said magnets could harm the performance of the camera.

Thoughts?  Or link to article would be great.  Thanks!

Magnets, how do they work?

I would assume a massive magnet would do some sort of damage, but without some magnetic based tape system normal magnets probably don't do anything.  (Not sure about film cameras)

I think the magnet is more likely to cause problems with the media card where you are storing the images rather that the camera itself...What is the scenario? Do you have a specific concern?

Nope magnets can't harm SD cards according to this article:  www.makeuseof.com/tag/can-magnets-ruin-a...nt-use-your-sd-card/

Magnets and electricity are intimately related.  If they weren't, there would be no such thing as an electric motor, or generator, or electro-magnet.  Current flow through a conductor creates a magnetic field around that conductor and, conversely, inserting a closed conductor loop into a magnetic field will cause current to flow in that conductor.  So, it is possible for a magnetic field to play havoc with any electronic device.  Whether it becomes a problem depends on both the strength of the magnetic field and the extent that the electronics are, or are not, shielded.

Magnets are only problems with magnetic media, like floppy or hard disks. They don't affect silicon memory (RAM, or your CF/SD cards). Your only risk with the magnet would be if there was enough iron in the camera for it to be pulled into the magnet at close range.
