Anyone happen to know if in the movies showing photographers snapping away, are these just extras holding cameras or are these actual photographers hired as extras?

You can probably count on the filmmakers knowing their photography gear, so they likely have enough of it to go around. I would bet that they are just extras or even people that are helping make the film.

Depends on if its a union movie. They are probably just CGI'd anymore....:P

Dont think they will be professional photographers as those  people will get upset about where they are standing, composition and lighting and disrupt the filming.

Then again method actors might do the same thing.

I live on the outskirts of a city where a movie gets made occasionally, sometimes in a historic neighborhood etc. Usually there's a casting call that goes out for extras, tells where and when to show up and what to bring, etc. I wouldn't think they'd contract with a photographer just to stand there with a camera.

There was one being filmed that they talked on the local news about using some vintage cameras to fit the era of the movie.

Working on the edge of the industry (location scout and sometimes location manager), it depends on how prominent the photographer will be. But it will depend on the director to specifically asking for a photographer to make it look authentic. Otherwise it is just a guy with a camera.

It depends on the film, the budget, and whether or not it's a union production. Sometimes, an extra will make money when he/she  otherwise wouldn't, if the extra provides equipment (their own car or other machinery, for example), and whether or not the extra is in any sort of closeup. The best way to break into this business is to sign with a casting agency, some of which specialize in providing extras. Don't expect to be able to get a living wage as an extra, however, as they often get lunch and bragging rights, and little else. This is especially true for non-union TV and film productions.

I knew a photographer who was an extra (as a photographer) in some movie one time (can't remember which one, doesn't really matter).

A lot of the time though, you can tell it's an actor holding a camera.
