Would you say publication in a small magazine means anything?

I have been submitting my work to larger magazines in hopes of getting published with no luck. A friend of mine who is also a photographer suggested that I look at smaller magazines, the ones that you might not find in the book stores. "Build up a publication resume, then approach the larger magazines" - is what he said to me.

As photographers, I know most really value the idea of getting published, but does it count when it's a little known name magazine? Does this concept of building a "publication resume" ever lead to getting published in big magazines or at least helps getting noticed?

I know my ego will be happy regardless. It would just be so darn cool to see in larger magazine.

What would it mean if you never got published? I've only had two or three, three I think it is, published, didn't get paid for any of them! But those photo's mean a lot to me, someone actually put them in a magazine! Does it mean anything to someone else? I don't care if it doesn't!

I see what you are saying, and I agree with you. Just kind of curious in the big picture how others feel about that topic.

Well it can mean something to you. But on a larger scale, no it will not mean much in the great scheme of things. The sad fact is that getting a photo in any magazine has become trivialized by the digitized era. Now there are exceptions such as Geo and glossies at that level, but for the rest not so much.

If it means something to you, that is all that matters. Anything else is just superficial nonsense.

Depends on what it is. Something that's regional in your area might be an option. See what their guidelines are for submission and if your type photography fits the type articles they publish.

There seem to be websites presenting themselves as magazines but you'd have to check them out and make sure they have a publisher, editors, etc. and that they're legit. Apparently there are some sites that want user photos to sell as stock photos etc. and seem to assume that users won't read Terms. A legit magazine should use a contract and provide compensation for publication.

Some newspapers and magazines may accept user photos for a specific regular feature that indicates User Submitted - like on the local news when they use someone's submitted photo of baseball sized hail on their back deck or whatever. I wouldn't consider that published since that's usually geared to amateurs who got a quick photo with their phone just for fun.

I agree, but also think that if it has meaning to you, then why even care about other influences?
