Home photo studio unprofessional?

Do you feel having a home studio is unprofessional? I don't want to give to much about this discussion other than my photography group tonight argued back and forth on this. Where do you sit on this topic?

Does having a home studio make you look any less professional as having a studio that isn't part of your residence?

A little less professional. But a lot more professional than those who never use a studio.

Define "home studio"?

Some folks have attached or detached spaces (e.g. a garage) that they convert to a studio space, add a separate entrance, and run their business. Others run out of their home. Still others only do on-location shoots and meet at Starbucks for client consultations.

I've had folks in my house and done work of which I'm quite proud. No dedicated studio space, just plenty of room. Does that make me less professional?

No.

A professional is able to produce consistent work, on demand.

Not if you have a separate space. I don't know if sitting in your living room or at the kitchen table say Professional. I think if you are able to have a dedicated room (and a separate entrance if possible) you can be a bit more "Professional" looking. But remember acting like a Professional is just as important as looking like one. IMHO

3 weeks ago, my wife and I went to a photographer who specializes in baby photos to take photos of our new son. This photographers studio was an entire 2nd house behind their main home. Personally, I didn't think any less of them. It was a great studio that felt very 'homely' and warm.

The only negative that I have about that photographers studio, was their driveway was made from concrete and not soft gummy bears. Because when we first got there, I forgot my iPhone 6 Plus (added cost for the doomed screen!) was sitting on my lap and when I got out of the car, it fell face first on the concrete and shattered the screen! I think it would have survived with driveway made from gummy bears. lol

Why would it? I think the photographers attitude would be more of an issue than space used for a studio.
