Both eyes open OR left or right eye only when looking through view finder?

I've been meaning to ask this for a while. Is there a right or wrong to which eye, or how you have your eyes when looking through a view finder? If you use right or left. And do you have your other eye open or closed?

I think you want to be using your dominant eye. If you don't know which that is, there are some tests to help you determine that. Here's two: www.wikihow.com/Determine-Your-Dominant-Eye

Close the other eye if you want. Or keep it open if you want. Do whatever works best for you.

I find that keeping both eyes open helps a lot when trying to zero in on a small target subject with a long lens ... one eye sees the whole scene while the other sees only the narrow field. Then using only the eye looking through the lens eliminates distracting elements that are not in the frame, allowing you to concentrate on what is in the frame.

For me, I look through my right eye and I do keep my left eye open when I'm shooting too. That's just my preference.

There are "right" ways to look through a telescope, but that is because you have to look for long periods at a time. With a camera, I like the dictum to do what is comfortable, though looking with the dominant eye makes sense. (See note by hghlndr6)

For me, my right eye is the dominate eye so that is what I'm comfortable with.  Depending on the shot, will determine if I have my left eye closed or not.

Both eyes are for looking at the digital display, when I'm looking through my view finder, I nearly always look through with my right eye, with my left open.

My Camera Bag:

Canon 7D | 50mm f/1.2 | 17-40mm f/4 | 70-200mm f/2.8 | 320EX | 580EXII

Right eye, but although I use my camera just about every day,
I will have to report back what my left eye does while shooting.

Makes me think about the boy that asked the old man with the two foot long beard if it sleeps up or under the blankets.
The next morning he came out clean shaved. His wife was shocked. "Why?'" she asked.
"I tossed around all night. Beard under the blankets, above the blankets, between the blankets..."

Well my right eye like most of you, and honestly I can't say I'm always doing anything with my left eye.
