How long will a battery last in a camera when not in use?

I'm talking to a friend online about how long a battery will last in a DSLR camera when not in use?  Does a DSLR draw power when not in use?

Most of the bodies turn themselves "off" but since they can be awakened with shutter button, it's pretty clear they're drawing power. I leave mine like that all the time, but the longest I've probably gone is only a few weeks.

They do draw power, not much.  I've had same battery in my camera for 2 months and it still was over half charged.

Same here, easily over a month.  I'm thinking closer to 2-3 months perhaps.

I would imagine it's only a few microamps & agree with Ted. You could always break out a multimeter and try to measure it.

Depends on the  temperature where it's being stored too

I think it depends. If you throw it in a drawer, it will go dead sooner or later. Put a battery in the frodge and it will still go dead in time but will last longer. But use the same battery in your camera in freezing weather and it will go dead a lot sooner. Of course the biggest difference is that in the camera it is being used to run the camera, the one in the fridge just sit's there not being used but in time will still go dead. I got some AA battery's some time back and got them dead brand new. I think there's only one true answer to this; they will go dead when they go dead! Always carry at least one full charged battery with you. On weekends when I shoot dog's, I make sure both my battery's start at full power.
