Why are compact flash cards still used in new cameras?

Aren't these a bit out dated and larger in size compared to SD cards?  Seems silly to me, kind of like 8 tracks in a car.  lol

CF Cards are much faster with read/write. In fact I would prefer to only use CF if computers came more often with readers for them. I only use my SD slot for transfer because it is more convenient.

:agree:  it's all about speed, CF are big and bulky compared to other options, however are much quicker read and write speeds.

Canon 7D | Canon EF-S 18-55 IS | Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 | Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 | Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro | CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L | 70-200 f/4 L | 580 EX II

+1 speed

An Irishman is not drunk as long as he can hold on to one blade of grass to keep from falling off the world.

"Much quicker" is probably a bit of a stretch. It appears the SDHC/XC cards come close to leveling the playing field (comparing theoretical maximums). SD cards fall far, far behind in performance, and are not worth using.  CF tops out in capacity at 128GB, although I think that's not really an issue for many photographers. Maybe for video.

Just $0.02.

You can also get CF cards in an actual hard drive I believe. The IBM micro drive if I'm not mistaken. Did you know the CF interface connector is simply a miniature IDE connector? I have a media center PC that uses an IDE to CF adapter I got from DealXtreme.com and the whole thing boots and loads off a solid state CF card. Pretty handy.
