Crap, well that's one way to closing off a weekend.  Drop your camera from a truck hood to the pavement!

Lens fell off and it just sounded so bad when it fell.

Something tells me, I'll be on the phone with Nikon all day tomorrow.  I hope this camera is not screwed up.

Bummer.

You might want to set your expectations for replacing the lens, and possibly the body (depending upon the damage and cost to repair).

You mean you did not try to see what the damage was?
Does it switch on?
Does the shutter react, etc etc.

Hassner asked good questions. The D300 is a tank, and I'd be more concerned with the lens.....Have you tried it yet?
I'm not sure, but being on the phone with Nikon will take all day, they'll say "send it in". It can't be diagnosed or repaired remotely.

Why so serious?

This is why you get it insured under home owners.  Hope it's alright.

Oh no!! Sorry to hear that.  I know every time I set mine down or ask my husband to hand it to me I flinch. Hope the camera still works.

I cannot count how many times my D300 has fallen, and got back up. As Ernesto pointed out they are built for war. The one time mine hit the ground it fell on the 18-105 lens I had so hard it knocked the aperture blades out of their seat. On that particular drop, I was  almost certain that at least the body mount got shifted, but nope, it is still fine.
