I currently moonlight with photography, learning how to build my business. I have some terrific mentors. I am also a software engineer that endeavors to apply critical thinking skills to all areas.

Gary is spot on with his posts.
I will just add that you do not need to register each, and every photo by itself. What you do is setup a collective works Copyright, and add photos to that collection of works, then they are all protected.
The old law on using the © on anything used to be that you had to register the work in one year after applying the mark, but now you do not have to. BUT just having the mark never has, or never will protect your work without it being registered.
Sp if you plan on putting your photos online in a public accessible arena, I suggest you do the collective works so you have the full protections afforded by the Copyright office.

Now does an image have a time limit that copyright is good for?

70 years after you're dead. Of course, it says provisions of copyright law are complex (nooo, really? lol).
