Why do camera store always try to stuff UV filters onto every lens sale?

You can be long time client and they still try to sell you a UV filter every time you buy a new lens.  Seriously are people really buying these?

I get it, it's a profit maker for them.  But having no real purpose aside from protecting your lens.  I'm surprised that they are so aggressive to sell them.

UV filters are not always helpful, I personally dont prefer UV filters all the time.  Now suppose you are a camera store person , and ur manager told you need more number of sales.. u being clever went through lot of blogs most of them mention to have a UV filter.. so you added the accessories to your stuff.. Its similar like if you buy a car , you will be given a Gps as it is an essential item :D :D

Selling UV filters with a lens is a practice that comes from the seventies when I came into the market. As a greeny then it was explained that it was for protection.
When I worked for a newspaper in the '80's with 14 other photographers, some of them stuck to the practice, as it was a tough environment for equipment and lenses were dropped. Most of the time the filter thread survived the drop then. But I had no need to protect filter thread, press work did not need filters.

Well they do bring some value IMO, not bad to have, but you need to have quality UV filter.  Otherwise, crappy filter on good lens doesn't make sense.

UV filters aren't needed as digital sensors are not as sensitive to UV rays as film is. If you must use a filter for the limited protection it offers, use an optically clear filter. That said, as already noted, it's a high profit item for the stores...

Just to increase their sale. It is like the extended store warranties, the sales labor gets the atta boy, and something extra for selling you worthless items.
As Scott said UVs were needed with some films back in the day, now it you want to protect your lens in adverse environments, a clear is the way to go.

I have never had one,\. But there are people around more experienced than me that claim you need then. Only reason I might buy is to protect the glass front lens my self when cleaning.I have seen a couple lenses over the years that looked like they might need scraping before attempting to clean. I would image those lenses could need the protection! Easy way around it would be to simply keep your lens clean.
