I hate when people ask to borrow my camera

My neighbor just came over and asked, and I felt like a jerk when I said no.  You'd expect certain things people wouldn't ask to borrow.   My sister asked last year, she got the same answer.

shhhhhhhhhh

I find it easy to say no.....VERY easy!

Why so serious?

Why feel like a jerk? I have never had a problem with refusing to lend out my gear. My reason is that I know if they broke it they would not feel all that bad, or would feign regret, until you asked for repair costs. It would then be that they would be outraged that you expected them to cover it. Or that has been my experience when other things I have lent have been broken when lent.

Never have a hard time saying no here. My equipment represents a substantial financial outlay. Nope...can't loan this stuff!

I think that kind of situation can be awkward or uncomfortable sometimes. Maybe give the person a reason or two, such as that it's valuable equipment and you wouldn't want someone to feel bad if it got dropped or damaged and had to be repaired/replaced, or that you need it for your photography work so won't be able to loan it out.

Maybe suggest a place where they can rent a camera, or even where they can buy something used if they'll need to use it again.

An explanation for an answer is never required. Ever. Nor is an apology. Not for this request, not for any other.

We have a really bad habit in this country of attempting to explain/justify our position when it is not the one that is desired/expected. And no amount of yammering is going to mollify someone that wants things their way.

Just say "no" and stop talking.

I do, however, like the idea of suggesting options for renting or buying on the used market. That's gracious information.
