How good are you with a single flash?

Trying to get back into the swing of things has proven to be challenging.  The one area that I'm working on is flash photography.  I honestly don't see how some photographers can do so much with just one light.  I've seen some photographers use bounce cards and reflectors and pull off amazing looking lighting from just one flash.

When I try doing the same, the light always looks weak.  So, I'm going to ask for help.  Can you provide any?

Thank you in advance.

Well if I need more than 1 flash, I just use another flash or two.  I don't get creative or try to stretch the light.

I don't use a speedlight too often, but when I do I make every effort to get it off camera. It makes quite a difference.....

I wouldn't consider myself an expert with flash photography by no means.   However Effron brings up one important point: get your flash off your camera.  Now with regards to getting the most from one flash.

I think when you are trying to get the most from one light source, the Inverse Square Law comes into the picture.

Here's a good watch -

Nikon 18-55mm VR, Nikon 70-200mm VRII f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, SB-700 & SB-800

I'm with you, I've been working on improving my flash photography know how, but as you know, there's a little learning curve that goes along with it.
