Photo shoot is at windy sand dunes

I have an upcoming photo shoot that is being shot at some sand dunes.  It's always windy there.  I'm trying to lay out some precautions ahead of time so I can protect my gear as much as possible.

I won't have easy access to changing out my glass in a car.  So was thinking of using a trash bag.  However I still have my concerns about this.  If the wind is really making a mess of things, even changing lenses in a big trash bag could yield some sand in my camera.

Are the seals pretty durable on these cameras to keep sand out even during high winds?

The only time sand was a problem for me was during a sand storm in the desert. But it was so bad, that I could not stay out, as I got sand blasted as well.

If you are scared, use a see-through plastic bag, make a hole big enough for the front of the lens to stick through. If you shoot towards the wind, you can work the camera through the open end of the bag.

If I were you, in stead of changing lenses, I'll rather take (rent if needed) another body and pre-mount and pre-bag the cameras before you get out there.

Been there and done that.  I use clear plastic bags.  Trying to swap a lens in a dark trash back is nearly impossible and can get frustrating.

Man that's a tough one. I would never, ever change a lens outdoors in the desert. Just a few grains of sand in your camera can cause a ton of damage. But I guess if there is no alternative, build yourself as protective of a changing area as you can, minimize your lens (and memory card) changes, and hope for the best! The seals should be fine; its just when you're swapping lenses out that you need to worry.

Do you have two (or more) camera bodies? I'd premount a lens to each and go that route. No lens changes to worry about then!

Go there with the lens you know you'll be using the most.  If you have second body, load that one up with secondary lens.

Also don't forget protective filters on the lenses. I was at Cap Cod the last couple days and it was windy, took care and still have a beach to clean out of my camera.....

Why so serious?

:agree:
Yeah I would rather scratch a filter over a front element any day.
When I was living in Arizona I would use the clear plastic bags. The blow sand in parts of the upper desert are like talcum powder. The best way is decide which lenses you want to use, and bag them individually. Then you swap, and leave the used lens in the bag. Also you face the wind. Or if you are good at it you can close off the bag, and swap from the outside, I have done it, but it is a PITB, and totally unneeded. The bag itself will do the trick.
