Would you use a non DSLR for your primary camera on professional gigs?

So some friends and I had this discussion yesterday.  I was surprised with some of the answers.  I'm going to be vague at this point as I want to hear your answer before I leave any further comments.

I think it depends on what you're doing, and you need to use whatever you need to get the job done.

I've done sports and events and have used cameras that look like they've been dragged around hockey rinks. Nobody seems to give a rat's, they expect results and don't really care how you get the job done as long as it meets their needs and they're satisfied with the results.

Agree,  depends on what the photos are going to be used for.  With a quick underlining explanation that would depend on what size prints would be needed.

If no requirements, then yeah, I'd use what ever I had on me that was able to take quality images for the purpose the client wanted.

Yes, no trouble.  IF it was the right tool for the job.

The non-SLRs you have in mind is normally smaller than the SLR.
I added the battery grips to my SLRs, not for extended battery life, but for weight and size for my big hands and balance for the heavier lenses. Also, I always see where I can get away with not using a tripod.

So using a smaller camera for any job is not for me.

Yeah, why not?  If it does what I need, then sure.

Like others have said, it depends on the purpose. It also depends on the camera we're talking about. I've used my iphone to take real estate photos that I knew were only for the web and they turned out just fine. I wouldn't use my phone for a wedding gig though! I'd use a mirrorless system, however.

+1 if it's the right tool for the job, I'll use what ever.  No vanity concerns here.

The person holding the camera is way more important than the camera itself now days.
