Why people don't smile in photos from 1800's?

Have you noticed that all old photos from 1800 era, that people aren't smiling at all?  

What's with that?

Yes, it also has to do with teeth, serious dental hygiene is a twentieth century development.......

Didn't exposures back then take a couple of minutes? Can you even imagine staying still for that long? Or having a kid sit still for that long?!

That and having an armature sticking in the back of your head too. :lol:
Also getting a family portrait was considered a very formal, and serious affair. Smiling in photos as a rule did not really start till around the Roaring 20s. This came with the final death of the Victorian societal norms. Lets face it prim and proper died around that time in much of the country.
