Abe's of Maine legit camera store?

7 years 11 months ago #481240 by Uplander
I was looking at getting the new Sony A7R II and noticed that everyone has this for around $3198.  However Abe's of Maine list it for $2605.  Are these guys a reputable seller.  What's the catch here?

Might be used or grey market?

I've never bought anything from them, mostly because their online reviews are horrendous.

I have heard that they piece everything out. The price is for the camera body only. If you want a body cap, it's extra. If you want a battery, that's extra. If you want whatever it's extra. If you try to buy it without the extras, they are magically out of stock. That is the story I have heard from people. Don't know if true or not. It's not worth the chance in my opinion.

That's a $500 difference compared to everyone else.  Got me, something doesn't smell right.  Who knows, these days.

I bought a point & shoot Nikon digital from them well over a decade ago with no problems but current reviews say they are not good to deal with nowadays.

In photography, as in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I just did a search for a number of cameras on Google shop, and their pricing is lower than everyone else on all the cameras I searched.  I'm just wondering, what's the catch.

I can't image they are opening up the OEM box and taking out the 'extras' that normally come, and selling separately??

Ernest, when did somebody move Brooklyn to Maine?!  I'm kidding - you're right!! They're actually in Brooklyn. And have a bad reputation.

In this thread there are a couple of comments that someone thought the old Abe's (in Maine)was sold some years ago, seems like whoever owns it is just using the name.

Reviews on Photo.net (which has listings for lots of camera stores) say things like 'liars', 'crooks', and 'out and out trickery'. Guess that ought to tell you something.

Better re-imagine that then. I've been told by 2 or 3 people that is what they do. They also push overpriced extras on you and if you don't take those, the camera will suddenly be out of stock.

I'm after a Canon EOS R.  So would you say this is USA warranty?

It's $1589 here.  What is the deal with this?
