What's with all the selfies photographers feel the need to take all the time?

It's kind of annoying, when you are trying to take a photo of something and you have someone holding up their phone, in your frame to take a selfie.  You read about all these people taking wild animals out of their elements and taking selfies, only then for the animal to die.

Seems kind of self absorbed if you ask me.

Self-absorbed indeed. Part of the world we live in now, I suppose.

Well, I take a selfie every day with my son.  I've been doing this every day since his first day of school (we have him in a Montessori school) around 6 months old.  He's 14 months old now and I'll most likely continue to do this till ???

I do this for sentimental reasons and one day I'm going to make a cool time lapse.

Dad and his best bud...

Matter of fact, here is this mornings shot :)

My wife and I take selfies so we both can be in the shot.  I see nothing wrong with them.  The people doing these shots with the animals (like example from above), yes, idiots.

I find the recent backlash against the selfie to be quite interesting, especially considering that the "selfie" has existed all throughout art history. Is the modern photographer taking a selfie any more self absorbed than artists like Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Francesca Woodman, Lee Friedlander, or even the ancient Egyptians? I think it's natural for us to be fascinated by ourselves; it's just that the mediums have changed over the years, and overall accessibility has increased.

The selfie may be inherently self indulgent, but then again, I'm just as guilty as any of taking a selfie on occasion...

Very true. Some people take selfies and do so in a way that's not intrusive on others, but the idiots that wander into other people's photos and fall off cliffs are the ones that everyone remembers.

For me, the difference is in how the "selfie" is taken. Van Gogh painted his self portrait. That's miles different than people aimlessly wandering into other people's shots while taking a selfie. This isn't to say that selfies can't be taken in a manner that is respectful, but unfortunately the idiots that aren't respectful are the ones that everyone hears about.

Personally, I find NOT being in a picture is a side benefit of taking the photograph.

Why so serious?

Firstly, a 'cell phone' is not a camera and someone using one to 'take a photo' is NOT a photographer...

Secondly, if you feel the urge to take a 'selfie', stop! Think about what you're doing, give yourself a slap to the face and move on...

We have been taking "selfies" for a long long time.  Remember when your dad set up the timer then ran to be in the picture before it went off?

To each their own, if you feel like taking a selfie, then go for it.
