Keeping photography gear safe in pick up truck?

7 years 9 months ago #489629 by CaptNemo
I need to figure out how to keep my gear locked up and secure in my pickup.  I'm looking at one of these chests.  However I'm wondering where I might find some padding that I could make a custom insert for all my gear.

Ideas?

BTW do you think this is overkill?  My wife seems to think so.  I was telling here, this sure beats the alternative of my gear getting stolen.

This is what I'm talking about.  It's on sale at Walmart:

I have an extended cab pick up, and the windows are darkened. I wouldn't leave my gear in it anyway, or with that chest you linked in ANY larger, crime infested city. Around where I live its not as much a gamble, so it all depends. That would be better than nothing, it would need to be padded and hot days would be a problem.....

Why so serious?

I would contact some of those hard case companies and see if they sell the inserts on their own.  If they don't, they might point you in the right direction.

I'd check how strong that locking mechanism is. All I'd need is a crowbar and your gear would be mine. Then again, a crowbar would break the window too.

I have one of these on my truck and I just toss my entire camera bag into it.  That keeps everything safe.

I have one also, but mine is full of tools.  I can't imagine a hammer or any other heavy items in there brushing up against my camera gear.  YIKES

Seems to me it'd be safer in there than in plain view inside your car.

Plus the heat would be an issue I would think?

I wouldn't chance it...doesn't look especially protective and i've learned the hard way not to leave valuables out of sight..
