Tripods are no longer allowed on Santa Monica pier??

7 years 8 months ago #489919 by Frost Photography
I photographed a couple at the Santa Monica pier and got off about 15 minutes worth of shots before a security guard came up to me and asked me to put away my tripod.  Further stating that they didn't permit these to be used due to liability.

Really?

Since when??

What's funny is that I just got off the phone with a buddy who lives in North Carolina, he was mentioning that it's the same there.  Last few years piers and other public places are becoming more strict with tripods.

Why the need for a tripod  when shooting a couple ? The tripod is a potential tripping hazard.

No, it's because everyone is ready to sue over the slightest incident now.

What's wrong with using a tripod for photographing people?  If you need it, you use it.  That has always been my thoughts.  Yeah, I get it, certain places you can't.

Try using a monopod.

The problem is the drunks, dopers and unattentive texter types that trip over them. So we pass laws punishing and prohibiting the clear thinking and productive citizens. What's new about that?

You're conducting business on their property if you set up and do a shoot and get paid/do so in trade, etc. That puts you into the category of being a business, and a park (or in this case, pier) is intended for recreational use. A tripod and setting up a shoot could be in the way of others using the park/property too.

I'm seeing the same thing in my area; there are now restrictions and/or a cost to do a photo shoot many places. I think rules were already in existence to film a movie (as that happens in my area from time to time), now it applies to photographers as well. Cameras might be allowed just to take pictures for personal use; see if the pier has any rules or guidelines. They may issue permits, some places do.
