Why proprietary lens mounts??

Just curious, why proprietary lenses vs a standard universal mount?

I've wondered this myself.  This would make things so much easier for the consumer.  Not to mention, I bet this would result in more innovation with lens manufactures.

Changing something like this would be a nightmare.  I think a good idea, but huge cost for the manufactures.  Then there would be the decision  on which mount size to go with.  Can you imagine how that discussion would go?

I'm mostly happy with the status quo, Nikon almost makes everything I desire.....except I wish I could use the Canon MPE65 lens without buying a Canon body.....:(

Why so serious?

Camera sensor registration distance differences for starters would prevent this from happening. There would be added costs involved. They used to use T mounts & the Tamron introduced "Adaptall" mounts where the mounts compensated for those differences back in film days, but with all the electronics in today's cameras/lenses, it would be a nightmare to attempt to go that route.

I've often thought that.  Especially these days considering that I'm thinking about picking up a Nikon camera.   Having all the glass universal between manufactures would sure save us $$!

Oh, so I think I know the reason why.
