Why do you use dual memory cards when one is enough?

Many of the newer cameras have two slots.  I just don't get it when you can use just one card.  Seems like added space, and cost built into the camera.  Heck, I would rather see GPS positioning or something cool vs this feature.

Care to add your 2 cents?

It doesn't matter as much to a hobbyist. It's automatic backup for people who need to make sure they come away with the image at a one time event, like a wedding, or photojournalistic opportunity. If one card fails, you have the other. It may be a rare, but that is why for most. Some people split duty of the cards. One file type stored on one card, another type stored on the other.

I use the second at times for overflow, like when shooting a time lapse, stacking star trails, etc. Usually though, one would be enough. However, I have many times been saved by the second card after forgetting one in the reader and left the house with only the back up in the camera....

Why so serious?

I use the second as a backup. One time I shot all day at a field trial and deleted the card by accident. Now I use it for backup.

Having that second card has saved me more times than I care to count. It's a must for me for sure.

To put it simply, it's better to be safe than sorry!
+1 for backup and overflow purposes

One is never enough as far as I'm concerned.

It's there should the need arise.

Normally when I'm shooting sports, I have it set to auto-switch to the second card when the first one fills up. It's rare, but something that first one fills up and I never miss a beat needing to swap cards.

If I was shooting something critical, I would likely set it to write the same on both cards for backup purposes. Disaster recovery so to speak.
