50mm for portraits?

Have you ever taken a day or few days and shoot with just one lens?  Like the 50mm?  The last few days I've been shooting nothing but my 50mm.  It really get's the juices going.  Some say it's not a good portrait lens, I disagree.

Where do you stand?

Once you get the fundimentals down in photography, rules are meant to be stretched.  Use what you enjoy using and don't pay much attention to society norms.  Get out there and be unique.

Personally I have a 50mm on my Sony right now and it's what I've been shooting with for a month or so.  It's a fun lens.  And yes, it makes you think about how you are going to capture the shot.

I use a 50mm every so often.  Haven't in some time though.  50mm challenge PT?

I love my 50mm lens. So versatile! I've used it for portraits before and loved the results. Like Alex said, it's a fun lens to push the boundaries with.

Well, there was a time... way, way back ... when all I had was a 50mm.  So yes, I've used it to shoot everything.  As for portraits, it will do the job, but ... on a full-frame, I find the working distance to be much too close.  On an APS-C, it's just about right.  My "go to" for a portrait now is 105.

See my avatar photo ...  Used the 50mm f/1.8 on the D7100.

My first lens was a 50mm too!  So I used that lens for nearly 6 months.  50mm till is one of my favorites.

Every lens has its strengths and weaknesses, but when I'm shooting for fun I do like to challenge myself from time to time with just one lens. However, I do hate the feeling of having a specific shot in mind and having to change plans or abandon the thought entirely just because I'm missing a lens!

But for the record, I love my 50mm and think that it makes pretty spectacular portraits.

There was a period years ago when all I shot with was a 50mm. I agree - using one lens for awhile really gets the creative juices flowing. One of my all-time favorite lenses!
