No rules in photography?

I just read this article ( fstoppers.com/originals/photography-art-...eed-not-apply-142352 ) about how FStoppers gets backlash for posting photos that have obviously been manipulated in post. The guy has a good argument that there are no rules in photography and whether what you do is in camera or in post, it's still art and art isn't governed by rules.

I like his take on the subject. What do you guys think?

Whatever, as long as a manipulated photo isn't pushed as otherwise...and honesty is most important in photo journalism though. Many genres like some astro/night photos aren't possible without some processing techniques, so I tend to lean toward "no rules" myself....

Why so serious?

The word "rules" often starts arguments.  So this is partly an issue in semantics.  My personal practice is that I will clone out telephone poles, etc, to clean up an image.  But I do not composite objects into the scene, or replace skies.  That's just me, not a rule.

A photograph isn't necessarily art just because some guy on a website says so. He's referred to as a 'curator' when that job in the real world takes much more skill than picking out photos on a website. Especially one where the so called writers are site users who submit articles but don't necessarily have any expertise or skill in writing as far as I can tell (and usually aren't getting paid).

I think it's better if a photo is a composite or altered that it be referred to as a photo illustration or an altered photo. Whether it's done digitally or for people like me who do 'alternative processes' done by hand, it takes it from being a photograph to a photo illustration/altered photo. If that's not being made clear that could be why they've gotten some backlash.

And since I only occasionally have glanced at fstoppers I took a look and I don't see where they're located (to find out if they're even a registered business). Glancing thru their Terms I don't think I could agree to those if I wanted to use their site/do a submission. I can tell somebody is making money from ads... other than that I don't think I'd put too much value on what they say about photography.

I'm in the "who cares" camp, I suppose. On the one hand, art is art, so the argument that there are not rules is valid in that sense (in my opinion anyway). I do see the other side of the issue as well, in that if it's a composite it should be labeled as such. It really is a matter of semantics and honesty as others have pointed out.

In my opinion the notion that the legitimacy of a photograph as a piece of art is in any way linked to the amount of processing its gone through is ludicrous. I understand the discrepancies that arise as far as journalistic integrity goes, but otherwise, I say that there are no real rules.

Eh, people get worked up for silly crap if you ask me.  If the photo works for the purpose, in famous words from the Beatles... "Let it be".
