How did you get your start as a photographer?

Got my first SLR years ago and kept it as a hobby for years...finally gained the confidence in my images to pursue it as career. Quit my desk top and haven't looked back since then

My grandfather noticed that I took an interest in it, and gave me one of his 120 cameras. You had to focus, and could set the aperture, but the shutter was one speed. That was when I was nine, ever since then I have been ruined.

I've always had interest in photography.  After college I started taking more photos and then it happened, I was hooked.

Always enjoyed taking pictures. In my teens and twenties I worked jobs that I hated as a receptionist and in retail. Finally, I realized that I could make a living doing something that I loved - haven't looked back since :)

My parents were always into photography.  When I was younger my father gave me my first camera, it was a hand me down, but it was fun for me.  And it stuck.

Well ever since I was about 15-16 I've had a passing interest in photography I joined the Military at 19 and received a Canon AE1 35mm from my father and got a little more involved in but I was more focused on art(ink and acrylics, I then suffered a brain hemorrhage at the age of 24 so needed an artistic outlet so I just naturally levitated into the medium of photography and have been addicted ever since. I have developed quite a passion for the hobby and even had a couple shows and paid gigs

I took photography in high school. The emphasis was still on film at that point. I forget the camera I had, but it was a blast learning how to use it. Been into photography ever since.

Had a girlfriend that shot weddings and her assistant fell through on her just before a big gig. I got roped into taking his place. We broke up, but I've been shooting for years now.

I borrowed my dad's Minolta rangefinder and started taking candids of all the girls!  When I graduated they gave me a Pentax K1000.  In college I worked as a second shooter and darkroom tech (mostly black and white).  Our studio's basement had a B&W processing lab from the 40's and 50's, which we got running again and processed a few shots for the fun of it.  I had a great time, and we shot everything that year: portraits, rodeo's, architecture, and magazine covers for a mountain man magazine.

Another former painter here. I first got a camera to record subjects for future paintings. I still paint, but as the years have gone by I've found myself becoming more and more attached to the photos on their own.

So interesting to hear everyone's stories!  I didn't get really interested in photography until after I retired.  I read everything I can find to help me understand how to get better at it.  I just love the idea of capturing something and being able to keep it forever.
