Dealing with interruptions when photographing or post processing?

7 years 7 months ago #495044 by Jakov Barnes
I don't know about you.  However interruptions, even a friendly one kills my focus when behind my camera or post processing.  Takes me a bit to get back into any sort of grove.  Aside from wearing a sign that says don't bother me and noise canceling ear phones.  What are you doing to stay tuned into your work?

I block off time and ask not to be disturbed.

Depends on the situation, yes? If you're in a studio, put calls straight through to voicemail. Leave your mobile phone on your desk. Just minimize people's ability to reach you for that hour or two hours you're with your client. If you're outside, just be polite, but firm. Explain you're working and need to keep your attention on that work. That was always the hardest part for me - basically telling people to scram but doing it in a professional manner.

When my office door is closed, it's closed and I get left alone.  If it's open, I'm fair game.

If I need to be alone, I go somewhere remote....

Why so serious?

Same here, though I'm not a photographer by trade. Still works though!

Start out by closing the door and locking it, as well as turning off my cell phone. For me personally, I like to turn on some classical music. Usually, that's enough to do the trick at blocking out the rest of the world.

Generally, I don't have to deal with distractions while I'm shooting. But I have a few strategies regarding avoiding distraction while post processing. I'll usually throw on a podcast to listen to and work in a quiet place. Recently I cleared out an office of my own at home, but beforehand I'd go to a place like a library or coffee shop where it's possible to work for several hours without interruption. It also helps if you can get as much done when your family/roommates are out and about or asleep.

I struggle a lot with getting back "into the zone" once I'm distracted. I think that Lavender has a lot of good pointers, although I personally work a bit better in the comfort of my home.

When shooting I make a point to let others know that this is work for me and not a time to sit around and shoot the breeze. I'm not a jerk about it, but I'm definitely firm when I tell them that "I'm working." When post-processing, I usually head to the public library and find a secluded corner and put my headphones on.

OP - I was just thinking are you speaking more of people you live with or just in general when you are out and about?
